For those of you who didn’t grow up in the 1980’s, Voltron is one of the very first Japanese anime series to be butchered…excuse me, I mean adapted…to the American market. Much like Robotech, a similar hack job, two or three anime series were crammed together and redubbed in English in order to amuse and stupefy children in Saturday mornings so their parents could sleep in. Also like Robotech, it was wildly successful.Unlike the vast majority of knock-offs that came after it, it was surprisingly good.

The plot (and stop me if you’ve heard this before; it seems to be a recurring theme in anime) is simple: a bunch of young people control vehicles which combine into a giant robot and use the robot to defend their home planet. In the cartoon/anime series, the action was self-contained and the issue resolved at the end of each 22-minute episode. Image Comics (and later, Devil’s Due) do a terrific job adding “meat” to this somewhat simplistic story. Like the new Transformers, Infiltration series, the artwork is clean and the colors vivid and the storyline, while familiar to those who have seen the series, is refreshing.If you liked this show as a kid…read the comic.
